Idiotproof guide to installing Yume 2kki on your Windows 10 PC (or any other japanese RPG Maker game)

As you probably know, getting japanese RPG Maker games to work can be a pain in the ass, especially on Windows 10 machines. Gathering experience from my mistakes, I present to you my guide to installing it.

1. The Preparation

For your convenience, I've gathered all the files needed that are needed for this guide. Before downloading it, there are some things you should know:

  1. Any compressed packages coming from japanese sites should be unpacked with japanese characters encoding. Do not worry about messing this up, as I'll cover how to do it later. One such software is Bandizip, to be found here: https://en.bandisoft.com/bandizip/
  2. EVERYTHING IN PACKAGE #1 IS ESSENTIAL! Do not skip any of the files in it, as the game simply won't launch.
  3. Package #2 contains EasyRPG Player, which is a very convenient way of launching Yume 2kki, especialy for its non-blurry fullscreen mode. There are a few bugs with it, which I'll cover later.

Package #1:

Package #2 (EasyRPG Player):

Before the installation, use searching tool near your start menu, type "Apps & Functions", search for "Manage optional features", "Add a feature", and from here find and install the japanese supplemental fonts. After you've done that, go to Control Panel -> Clock, Language and Region -> Region -> Administrative -> Change system locale, and search for Japanese

Note: Do not check the box with Unicofe UTF-8 format

After you've downloaded the packages and done everything depicted in The Preparation, reboot your computer and proceed to The Installation.

2. The Installation

Unpack package #1 into any folder you like on drive C, and it should look something like this:

First of all, install RPG Maker fonts, which can sometimes be rather buggy on western PCs. Double click at every .ttf file and install it. Next, unpackage 2000rtp and 2003rtp with japanese encoding, so no characters get messed up. To do that, open one of these with Bandizip and change the Coding to japanese. It should look something like this:

Unpack it to any folder you want and install it, the same goes with 2003rtp (note: you should have any other versions of rtp uninstalled before installing those). After installing both of these, you can switch back to your region and reboot again. From then, unpack the Locale Emulator, and install it by launching the LEInstaller.exe. Now you should be able to launch Yume 2kki (note: it should also be unpacked by using Bandizip, to avoid any complications), by right-clicking on it, searching for Locale Emulator and choosing Run in Japanese.

Congratulations, you've made it! For any other game (such as .flow) do the same, except you already have 2000rtp and 2003rtp installed. However, I'd like to introduce you to an EasyRPG Player (to be found in package #2), which requires no Locale Emulator to be run and supports 1080p resolution and up. To install it, just place the Player.exe in your game folder, launch it and choose your game from the list in. The only siginificant problem with it I have found is that the PC is kind of buggy, and the music menu doesnt work properly. However, saving is fine and everything else also should be fine.

Just dont go to the music menu and you should be fine.
